A New Choir for Jerusalem

The Zamir Choir was founded in 2024 on the initiative of and under the direction of Levana Danker, a longtime former employee of the Knesset. Ronit Banit, a graduate of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, serves as the choir’s music director. She holds a bachelor’s degree in music and was trained in piano, conducting, and music education.

The ensemble currently consists of about 45 singers. Their musical backgrounds are diverse: in addition to teachers and students, the choir includes graduates of academic music institutions as well as singers with practical musical training.

Music as a Community

Zamir was founded out of a desire to revitalize Jerusalem’s musical and choral life. Difficult years had led to the city’s musical and vocal ensembles being downsized or disbanded entirely. As part of the Hibba Center, Zamir’s repertoire combines Jewish liturgical music with classical music, Israeli songs from various eras, and other musical styles.

One of the choir’s particular strengths lies in its composition: young and older people, religious and secular singers, academically trained musicians, teachers, and enthusiastic amateurs all come together here. Singing together fosters connection, cohesion, and a sense of belonging. Especially during the war, in the face of pain, uncertainty, and social upheaval, the choir also became a place of hope and comfort for its members.

On Israel’s major stages

Within a short time, Zamir was already performing at major cultural and state events in Israel. These included a concert in honor of singer-songwriter Naomi Shemer, a recipient of the Israel Prize; events marking Holocaust Remembrance Day; and the official ceremony commemorating the 77th anniversary of the State of Israel. In addition, he performed alongside well-known Israeli singers, took part in state celebrations, and gave concerts featuring works from the classical repertoire.

In this way, the young ensemble developed its own artistic identity, one that brings together Jewish heritage, Israeli culture, musical excellence, and a sense of community.

Zamir at the Louis Lewandowski Festival

The choir considers its participation in the Louis Lewandowski Festival and this year’s theme , “Psalms in Time and Space,” a special honor and artistic opportunity. In Berlin, Zamir will perform alongside leading choirs from various countries and focus on works that are part of the Jewish people’s cultural heritage.

At the same time, the ensemble aims to bring to life the unique musical voice of Jerusalem—the city that has been closely linked to the world of the Psalms for millennia.
