The majority of South African synagogues are orthodox and do not allow women to partake in singing. This means that even though the tunes of Lewandowski and his contemporaries are still widely sung in these synagogues, the original texture and harmonies are often lost.

The majority of South African synagogues are orthodox and do not allow women to partake in singing. This means that even though the tunes of Lewandowski and his contemporaries are still widely sung in these synagogues, the original texture and harmonies are often lost.

Most of the choir’s repertoire is made up of the compositions of Louis Lewandowski, Salomon Sulzer and Salomone Rossi, but we also sing secular baroque music and traditional African choral music.

The Lewandowski Chorale was founded by its conductor and musical director, Adam H. Golding, at the beginning of 2012. Since then, it has given numerous concerts in Johannesburg and Soweto. We also took part in the second Lewandowski Festival in Berlin in 2012. More recently, in March 2016, the Chorale organised and hosted the first ever festival of mixed voice Jewish liturgical music in Johannesburg and Cape Town to great critical acclaim.
The Lewandowski Chorale is currently accompanied by organist, Kyle Nel.t.
