The Johannesburg Jewish Male Choir celebrates 25 years of worship for the Jewish community in South Africa. The first performance took place in 1985 at the Linder Auditorium in Johannesburg – in memory of Cantor Johnny Gluck, whose wonderful voice still sounds in our hearts. Through his commitment, the JJMC succeeded in keeping the legacy of Jewish music alive.

The JJMC has attracted choristers from around Johannesburg, many of whom sing in Synagogue choirs. The Choir elevates the sound of Jewish prayer and song to unreachable heights. It has been privileged to have performed with some of the greatest Cantors during their travels abroad as well as at home. The JJMC has been an excellent ambassador for the South African Jewish community and the country as a whole and is an acknowledged part of the Jewish art scene of Johannesburg.

The JJMC’s music has encapsulated the very core of Judaism through song, encompassing the history and hopes of the Jewish people. In a language that knows no geographical boundaries, the music speaks to every listener, reflecting the traumas of the past and the dreams of the future.

The performances of the Choir reflect the dedication, enthusiasm and commitment of the Musical Directorate and choristers who give of their time on a voluntary basis. Their reward is the knowledge that through their efforts, numerous charities have benefited and the culture of the Jewish people has been experienced by many.
