Hidden Voices is a professional chamber ensemble founded by Ukrainian-Israeli-American conductor and educator Dr. Julia Zavadsky. Its goal is to promote intercultural exchange and bring Jewish music into dialogue with contemporary traditions—from the musical renaissance to modern compositions.
Inspired by the beauty of Jewish heritage, the ensemble unearths hidden treasures and brings them to life alongside classical masterpieces of choral literature. The musicians are distinguished soloists from Philadelphia and New York who perform on the most prestigious stages in the US and around the world. Together, they develop an artistic language of extraordinary depth and vitality.
Highlights include concerts featuring works by Claudio Monteverdi and Salamone Rossi in the Music in the Pavilion series at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a program celebrating American Jewish choral music at the 15th Louis Lewandowski Festival in Berlin.
A close artistic companion is cantor Natasha Hirschhorn, composer, pianist, and conductor, who has lived in the United States since 1992 and works on New York’s Upper West Side. She has composed numerous works for leading Jewish ensembles and received the Cantor Moshe Nathanson Award in 2023.
Dr. Julia Zavadsky is also Interim Associate Chair of Musicology at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and directs the Nashirah ensemble. Her projects bring together international artists, highlight the treasures of Ukrainian choral music, and initiate encounters between Israeli and Palestinian musicians.
