The London Cantorial Singers were formed by Ian Lyons in 1995. The aim of the Choir is to perform synagogue music, once popular but now rarely heard, as far as possible in the composers’ original settings. Our repertoire also includes Israeli and Yiddish popular songs.
The Choir performs across the whole range of Jewish events including concerts, musical evenings, Selichot and Sefirah services, full chazanchoral Shabbat services, Weddings, Bat Chayil and Bar Mitzvah services, in order to educate and to improve public interest in and knowledge of the art of Jewish Cantorial music. The Choir endeavours to raise funds to promote the above aims and for charitable causes within the community.
The Choir’s members are mainly drawn from synagogue and other Jewish choirs in the Greater London area. Our soloists include several chazanim, notably Henry Black formerly at Stanmore United Synagogue, David Shine, formerly at the North Hendon Adath Yisroel Synagogue and David Rome, the Minister and Chazan of the Catford and Bromley United Synagogue.
The Choir was originally directed by David Hilton and subsequently by Michael Simon, then chazan of the Edgware Yeshurun Synagogue. In 1997 the baton passed to the present Musical Director David Druce.
Under his leadership the membership has grown to over 30 choristers and the Choir has performed both nationally and abroad. David’s music education commenced at an early age and he studied both piano and guitar. His love of Cantorial music evolved from the age of 9 when he joined the Hendon United Synagogue choir under the direction of the renowned conductor Lionel Leigh and the world famous cantor Moshe Korn.
We have sung with guest Chazanim, including the world famous Jerusalem based Cantor Chayim Adler and other internationally acclaimed Cantors, Benjamin Muller of Antwerp, Yitzchak Meir Helfgot originally of Ashdod, Issachar Helman of Basle Switzerland, Shmuel Barzilai of Vienna Austria, Benjamin Chait of Saarbrucken Germany and the late Moshe Schulhof z”l of Miami USA.
We have performed with Yaacov Lemmer in May this year. We have also been associated with many UK based guest Chazanim including Yossi and Rafi Muller, Avromi Freilich, Dov Speier, Gedalya Alexander, Jonathan Murgraff, Geoffrey Shisler and Albert Chait. The Choir has performed throughout the UK and in 2007 toured Germany, giving concerts in Saarbrücken and Frankfurt am Main.
