The Zemel Choir, founded in 1955 by Dudley Cohen, enjoys international recognition as one of the best mixed Jewish choirs worldwide. The large repertoire covers all aspects of Jewish culture – Ashkenazic, Sephardic, Yiddish and Israeli.

The ensemble is particularly proud of the fact that it sings on major stages in Great Britain and overseas, not only well-known works, but also new pieces by contemporary composers that are often specially commissioned.

Highlights include two performances at Westminster Abbey: the commemoration of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau (February 2015) and a “‘Service of Solemn Remembrance and Hope on the 75th Anniversary of Kristallnacht ‘(2013). In 2012 we organized the first European Jewish choir festival, an event that later took place in Vienna and Rome, before returning to London in 2015. In 2016 an event took place in Israel in which the Zemel Choir participated alongside choirs from Jerusalem and Vienna. Our Celebrate with Song events (now Come & Sing), with the aim of raising awareness for Jewish choral music through workshops and performances, have been running for ten years.

The most recent projects took place in collaboration with the London Jewish Cultural Centre, the West London Synagogue and London’s Jewish cultural hub, JW3, in London. In recent years we have performed at various venues in London, including the South Bank Center, the V & A Museum and twice at the Mayor of London. In 2005, the choir celebrated its Golden Jubilee with a concert at St. John’s, Smith Square, while its 60th anniversary event took place in November 2015.
